What is the Capital District Trails Plan? The Capital District Trails Plan is a strategy to link together the various recreational trails in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties into a single connected network of trails for everyone in the region to enjoy. This planning effort will identify existing trail locations throughout the region and work with local communities to envision potential new trail routes which will infill missing segments, connecting to each other and to key points of interest. This plan, sponsored by The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC), will involve the input from residents, community leaders and stakeholders through different public meetings, workshops and surveys as they are scheduled throughout the coming year. The goal is to develop a vision for a connected, regional network of multi-use trails that is accessible to all Capital Region residents. Is this work related to the proposed Empire State Trail? In the spring of 2017 Governor Andrew Cuomo announced funding for the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile trail from New York City to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo, anticipated to be completed by 2020. The Empire State Trail creates an important north-south and east-west spine of our regional trail network, however it does not connect all our local communities, which is the ultimate goal of this particular project. The Capital District Trails Plan will identify gaps in the existing and planned network and the potential for new connections and facilities which will build off of that important spine. How can I participate? I want to share some ideas! This planning effort will involve public meetings and workshops as they are arranged and scheduled in different counties. Who is CDTC? CDTC is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties. CDTC is a forum for local elected officials and transportation representatives to share ideas and make decisions about major transportation capital investments, including bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
